UNIMA Signs Contract; Hands Over Site

By Anderson Fumulani (Zomba 07.04.25) – University of Malawi (UNIMA) – Chancellor College has signed a contract and handed over the site in readiness for rolling out construction of new -three-storey Teaching and Learning Complex at Chilunga campus in Zomba


UNIMA becomes the fourth Higher Education Institution (HEI) of the nine public universities under the Skills for A Vibrant Economy (SAVE) Project to sign a contract and also handover construction site. The other three public universities who signed contracts and now construction is underway include Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) and Malawi University of Sciences and Technology (MUST).


Plem Construction Limited (PCL) will construct the new MK7.88 billion three-storey teaching and learning complex at UNIMA.


Vice Chancellor for UNIMA Professor Samson Sajidu said he was excited to handover the site to the contractor describing the occasion as a “great milestone”. Professor Sajidu said he expected nothing less but “quality work” from the contractor.


On his part, Professor Sajid said he was committed to facilitate as much as possible whatever relevant resource the contractor required during construction. He reminded the contractor to adhere to the environmental safety and social safeguards as a requirement during construction.


PCL Operations Director Rado Nair promised to adhere to the environmental and social safeguards requirement during construction. He also promised to complete the construction within one year – by May 29, 2026.


Construction is expected to start on 17 May 2025 when the contractor will also complete mobilisation, on the same day.


A total of 31 institutions are participating in the SAVE Project. They include nine public universities - Mzuzu University (MZUNI); University of Malawi (UNIMA); Kamuzu College of Health Sciences (KUHeS) (CoM); Kamuzu College of Health Sciences (KUHeS) (KCN); Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR); Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), Domasi College of Education (DCE), and Nalikule College of Education (NCE).

Seven national technical colleges include Livingstonia Technical College; Mzuzu Technical College; Lilongwe Technical College; Salima Technical College; Namitete Technical College; Nasawa Technical College and Soche Technical College and 15 community technical colleges across Malawi.
